This morning I woke up to learn that one of the icons of my aspirations as a writer and world-builder…is on Substack. And do you know what he’s writing about?
World-building.
I shit you not, kids. My living, breathing, world-building hero,
is over there writing and talking about a new project he’s working on…which sounds kinda fascinating.Y’all, if what
says is true and I am, in fact, a world-building queen, then by C-of-E rules, I would be the keeper of the faith of which he is the living Godhead. (Go read his books, catch up with me here.)In response to this news, I wrote a Note1 about one of my greatest regrets in life, that time I didn’t have breakfast with Michael Stackpole, and how it has changed my perspective on opportunities. And because of this change in perspective, I dared to tag him. In the Note, and in this Post.
I refuse to miss out for lack of courage. And I hope that the story I shared this morning inspires you to make a change and reach out for the opportunities that might seem a little beyond comfort.
Why? Because you just never know what can happen unless you take the chance. Maybe he will never see them. Maybe he’ll never respond. Maybe he’ll be politely flattered at me dropping Douglas MacArthur Shaftoe’s eloquence like a sunken German submarine weighed down with Solomon’s Gold. Maybe…maybe…maybe.
I’m content to let them live in the ether, like a cat in an observation-proof box. And the result will either be a Trapezoid…or a Pentagon.2 In the meantime, World Anvil’s annual world-building Summer Camp and GenCon are more than enough to keep me focused and moving forward.
Go…read…Neal Stephenson! Right now! Referenced in this article: Cryptonomicon and The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O.
Aaahhh! Neal is HERE!?
*runs to go and sub*
Hehe...I sure love you. Thank you for the tag, and yes, I meant what i said...and if it was on MY substack...I'm always right.
Always.
I'm excited for you, to have found your idol! You now have me curious about his writing...
