Detours in Life
As the old saying goes, "Man plans, and God laughs." From time to time we must re-evaluate our structures and plans in order to move forward with the greatest effect.
Moving House is Exhausting & Other Tales of Burnout
Hi hi hi, my marvelous Moonbeams! This is not the article I promised you, and for that I apologize. I am going to have to interrupt this week’s planned schedule for a very mundane and boring reason: we’re moving.
While I had hoped to get through this week before making any changes, that plan has fallen through and here we are. My lease expires on the 16th of March, a little over a month from now. And because Dad did pretty much zero cleaning since Mom died five years ago…well, I have a lot more on my plate than I would prefer. (I’m moving into that house now that I own it, and he lives with his new wife in a nice retirement community a few minutes away.)
Still, as I’ve already said…here we are.
In addition to moving, I still have this newsletter, a worldbuilding class to write (I’ve got the outline done), and a solo RPG that I need to finish so that y’all can show me some love and buy it.
Oh, and a day job. And a family.
You might not know this, but writing non-fiction is bloody exhausting. Or maybe you do know this and it’s the whole reason why you write fiction! 🤣🙋🏻♀️ Either way, I know you will understand the feeling that goes with looking at all the promises you’ve made and deciding how to conserve the most energy while achieving your goals.
No. I am not going to stop publishing daily; I’m 2/3 of the way to my goal of publishing daily for a year, it would be ridiculous to give up now. However, I am going to let go of the structure for the duration of the move, possibly through the end of March.
So, what’s staying the same? Worldbuilding Wednesday, obvi. Saturday will still be worldbuilding prompts followed by a weekly wrap-up on Sunday.
The big change for the next several weeks will be me journaling my own adventures in worldbuilding. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday will all be dedicated to sharing articles, information, bits of fiction, and behind-the-scenes details about Argentii and its development.
“But, wait, Haly…isn’t this just a way to bundle two of your projects into one while at the same time forcing yourself to do worldbuilding instead of hiding from your goals and hoping they come true without effort?”
That little voice in my head is relentless. And correct.
Questions? Good! Send them to me for tomorrow’s “Ask the Bard” worldbuilding advice column!
