This special AtB features a conversation about horror's emotional impact between Haly and steampunk author D.W. Dixon. Also: Summer Camp updates and Project Franklin is accepting HALLOWEEN stories!
Great stuff, Haly. Ahhh, the era of VHS horror! My sister and I had a copy of Nightmare on Elm Street that we must have played at least a million times. We wore that thing out!
What's kinda crazy is that I was such a closet horror fan for soooooo long. It wasn't until Scream that I really began to lean in.
I was that kid in class who was always in trouble for reading Stephen King (2nd, 3rd, 4th grade). Eventually, I found a teacher who valued the READING and she fed me alllllllll sorts of interesting books.
My favorite memoir is by a woman named Emma Butterworth, and it's the story of growing up as a member of the Austrian National Corps de Ballet….during WWII, and in some ways it's one of the most horrifying stories I've ever read. She gave me that one.
By gave I mean loaned and I completely stole. (Sorry Ms. McGarvy!)
But watching New Nightmare literally broke my brain open and exposed me to both story and folklore in new and exciting ways that FORMED me.
As a kid, I hid from movies like Poltergeist and Firestarter. Now, I throw them on in the background when I need to avoid social media and write. But I never hid from them because they were scary….I hid because I was embarrassed by how fascinated I was!
Once you've seen it, I'm here if you need someone to talk to about it.
Personally, I prefer the Perfect Triple Feature: Nightmare on Elmstreet (orig), NoE 4 Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. IMO, everything else is optional, those are the essentials.
Boom. Thanks for this. Haly's playlist is cued up.
I'm pretty lucky. My youngest daughter (now 16 dear gawd) LOVES horror. She is my watching buddy. The wife and oldest daughter tend to avoid it. But at least I have someone who appreciates a good scare.
I will forever be indebted to you for giving me a perfect excuse to do the same tonight. Maybe Freddy can find a good spurty vein from which i can fill my pen.

For real tho!

OMG how dumb are we as kids, man?
LOL so dumb, we were.
At the risk of being tagged a poser, I have to admit, I don't think I've seen New Nightmare!
Whaaaaaa? I KNOW! May have to do a lil' Elm Street marathon for the kiddos. Introduce them to ol' Freddy fingerblades. Muah-ha-ha.
