Very classy to give me youthful ignorance as an out. I have acquired my own copy of the audio book and will check back in once my my mature and much more knowledgeable self has a chance to see just how badly I flubbed things. I don't think I caught the U. N. Owen thing before.
Funny enough, to nod to your title reference, that's also what I love about Agatha All Along. Everything that happens is laid out in the beginning, even though I didn't recognize it at first.
More to the point, I think one of the greatest misunderstandings of what readers want is that many aspiring authors make a twist come out of nowhere. They think the audience wants to be shocked and surprised... And maybe they're right, but like you pointed out, they do not want to be lied to. We should get to the twist and say "Oh, I misunderstood what these signs were pointing," not "Oh, this clue at the beginning lead nowhere." Try to fool your audience, but in a way that respects their deduction skills. Give them a chance to outsmart your characters.
Yes! Yes, exactly! For another contemporary television pull....look at *Succession* and how, at the end, the only thing anyone could say was holy fuck, every word had three meanings, I have to watch it again knowing what I know now.
I have to watch/read/play it again knowing what I know now. And I can't wait to see what they do next.
This, IMO, is the dream. This is the key to lasting success in the arts. Agatha did it. We can, too.
Great challenge! I wonder if that’s on my Kindle… (i’ve seen some of the movies, but couldn’t tell you which title was which…) Perhaps I’ll get a chance to listen to that also! Love Agatha Christie and great mysteries – the best fun to have! 👍
